Lorde has launched her own personally-curated station on Sonos Radio. Her station, SOLARSYSTEM, is available through the Sonos app and features music from both herself and those who inspired her, with a nostalgic look back over her life and musical journey.

A press release explains that SOLARSYSTEM “introduces listeners to the moments when music left a pivotal mark, such as school bus CDs, her piggy-bank-depleting purchase of Drake’s Take Care, and songs like ABBA’s “S.O.S” that made her know she wanted to make music.”

In a statement about the new station, Lorde said: “SOLARSYSTYM is like stepping into my brain, giving listeners a front row seat to the songs that have meant a ton to me and my life. It is a collection of forms, gravitationally bound, a handful of planets, dozens, more dwarf planets, and countless little rocks. All reflecting light from a sun. These are the forms that have altered my course for better.”

Lorde joins a roster of artists with Sonos Radio stations that includes Erykah Badu, Brian Eno, D’Angelo, FKA twigs, Björk, and Thom Yorke, among others.

Earlier this year Lorde, who is currently on tour supporting her 2021 album Solar Power, spoke out about a viral video of her hushing crowds during important moments of her live show.

Lorde is finally addressing those videos of her shushing concertgoers during her Melodrama tour.

Over the past couple weeks, various clips of the singer-songwriter telling multiple audiences to hush during her performance of “Writer in the Dark” have gone viral, sparking the creation of several video compilations and a bunch of memes. And now, it looks like Lorde herself wants to weigh in on the trend via a video she sent to Instagram fan page, @lordecontent.

“I just woke up,” she said, before saying she wanted to take a moment to “talk about this thing of me shushing people at my shows.”

“That was something that I did on that one song a couple times when I wanted to sing it a capella or off the microphone so people could hear me and because I wanted to try something different,” as Lorde explained. “If you come to my shows, you know it’s an hour-and-a-half of all of us singing and screaming together.”

She added, “Also that dramatic-ass move was literally for an album called ‘Melodrama,’ so don’t stress too hard.”

As Lorde stated, “Writer in the Dark” is taken from 2017’s critically acclaimed Melodrama, which was nominated for Album of the Year at the 60th annual Grammys. Her last album was 2021’s Solar Power.

Lorde recently embarked on the North American leg of the international tour behind her third studio LP, August 2021’s Solar Power. On Monday night, the New Zealand singer-songwriter played New York’s famed Radio City Music Hall, where she strayed from her regular set to perform a cover of “HENTAI,” a raunchy slow jam from Spanish flamenco-pop star Rosalía’s own recently released third album, MOTOMAMI.

Lorde’s Spanish pronunciation was shaky — note the painfully hard “h” in “Hazme un tape, modo Spike” — but she powered through, showing a clear appreciation for the track. Watch a clip from her performance below.

“I’ve listened to the Rosalía album every day since it came out,” Lorde recently wrote in her newsletter. “[F]uck, it’s so good, I gagged when I heard that interpolation of [Burial’s] ‘Archangel,’ ‘Hentai’ is genius… [P]rojects like this remind me why I live for pop music — at its best, there’s nothing better.”

Lorde has shared a music video for “Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen it All),” a mid-album track from her third studio LP, 2021’s Solar Power. It finds her singing to herself in triplicate, her clone chorus strolling down the beach as its differently styled members trade verses nonchalantly. Watch it above.

The short, which she co-directed with her long-time visual collaborator Joel Kefali, comes seven months after the record’s release and less than two weeks before the 25-year-old New Zealand singer/songwriter/pop star embarks on the North American leg of a spring and summer international tour. Lorde has shared a music video for “Leader of a New Regime,” a song from her recently released third album Solar Power. A plea for salvation from climate change hidden within an ironic acoustic interlude, “Leader of a New Regime” is a brief moment on Solar Power but its message is even more poignant now than when we originally heard the song. Lorde co-directs the video with Joel Kefali, setting the visuals near the seaside. Watch above.

Lorde shares EP of Solar Power songs sung in Māori
“Even if you don’t understand te reo, I think you’ll get a kick out of how elegant my words sound in it.”

Lorde has dropped surprise EP Te Ao Mārama, a collection of five songs from her new album Solar Power sung in Māori, the indigenous language of New Zealand. Proceeds from the EP will be donated to the New Zealand-based charities Forest and Bird and the Te Hua Kawariki Charitable Trust. Listen to it below.

In a newsletter to fans, Lorde exlained her decision to release the EP and her relationship to the Māori language. “Many things revealed themselves slowly to me while I was making this album, but the main realisation by far was that much of my value system around caring for and listening to the natural world comes from traditional Māori principles,” she wrote. “There’s a word for it in te reo: kaitiakitanga, meaning ‘guardianship or caregiving for the sky, sea and land.’”

She went on to add: “I’m not Māori, but all New Zealanders grow up with elements of this worldview. Te ao Māori and tikanga Māori are a big part of why people who aren’t from here intuit our country to be kind of ‘magical,’ I think. I know I’m someone who represents New Zealand globally in a way, and in making an album about where I’m from, it was important to me to be able to say: this makes us who we are down here. It’s also just a crazy beautiful language—I loved singing in it. Even if you don’t understand te reo, I think you’ll get a kick out of how elegant my words sound in it.”

The lyrics on Te Ao Mārama were translated by Hana Mereraiha while Dame Hinewehi Mohi & Sir Timoti Kāretu receive thanks for “overseeing” the project in its credits.

Lorde is Vogue‘s October cover star and, along with the feature, the singer shared her own take on Britney Spears’ 2008 track “Break the Ice.” Filmed inside the New York Botanical Garden, the Alfred Marroquín-directed clip transitions into Lorde’s own Solar Power track “Fallen Fruit.”

In the interview, Lorde discussed her fans, taking an extended break from social media, and grappling with celebrity. “I’m a highly sensitive person. I’m not built for pop star life,” she told writer Rob Haskell. “To have a public-facing existence is something I find really intense.”

New Zealand pop royalty Lorde is back with a new single called “Stoned at the Nail Salon,” another track from her upcoming album Solar Power. Unlike the jaunty, sun-stroked vibe of the album’s title track, “Stoned” finds Lorde in a more ambivalent mood, though an overriding sense of bliss pervades thanks to the golden electric guitar dancing across the stripped-down song.

“This song is sort of a rumination on getting older, settling into domesticity, and questioning if you’ve made the right decisions,” Lorde wrote in a press statement. “I think lots of people start asking those questions of themselves around my age, and it was super comforting to me writing them down, hoping they’d resonate with others too. I used this song as a dumping ground for so many thoughts…”

“The album is a celebration of the natural world,” Lorde said in a statement, “an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

In the since time Melodrama, Lorde has stayed out of the public eye until reviving her long-dormant onion ring review page on Instagram and, most recently, teasing the release of new music earlier this week. Today, she returns with the brand new song “Solar Power.”

After sharing the single’s artwork earlier this week, the acoustic track officially dropped after making a brief appearance on Apple Music and YouTube early Thursday afternoon. With production by longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, the song also features background vocals by Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo.
