NYT pointed to the risks for the United States in the boycott by countries of the summit of the Americas

The possible refusal of the President of Mexico to come to the summit of the Americas will interfere with the intention of the Biden administration to conclude an agreement on illegal migration. The United States is also concerned about the likely non-participation of the President of Brazil in the meeting. pointed out the risks for the United States in a boycott of the Summit of the Americas by countries” />

Joe Biden

A growing number of Latin American and Caribbean heads of state are considering withdrawing from the Summit of the Americas due in Los Angeles in June, writes The New York Times.

Including — Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, the newspaper reported, citing Brazilian officials. According to the newspaper, the Brazilian leader has a cool relationship with Washington, and the summit was supposed to be Bolsonaro's first meeting with US President Joe Biden.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador may also miss the summit: he said he would not come to the meeting unless representatives of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua were invited to it. Juan González, senior director of Western Hemisphere affairs at the US National Security Council, had earlier suggested this possibility.

The Mexican president was supported by the leaders of Bolivia and Honduras. Countries— members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) also threatened to boycott the summit if Venezuela was represented at it not by President Nicolas Maduro, but by opposition leader Juan Guaido (the United States recognizes the latter as interim head of state).

As the newspaper notes, the boycott threats highlight the problems that the Biden administration is facing. Ahead of the mid-term elections to be held in the fall of 2022, the US administration is seeking an effective regional agreement on illegal migration, according to a New York Times source. The absence of the Mexican president from the summit will make his conclusion more difficult.

Bolsonaro's failure to attend the meeting jeopardizes the achievement of two other significant foreign policy goals of the Biden administration, which are related to the issue of climate change and the defense of democracy, the newspaper writes. The NYT notes that during the Biden presidency, Brazil moved closer to Russia, Bolsonaro expanded the deforestation of the Amazon and “questioned the integrity of elections in his own country.”

At the meeting, the US and other countries could try to pressure Bolsonaro to “respect the democratic process”; and publicly supported his country's electoral system. However, according to the NYT source, the summit of the Americas is not on Bolsonaro's schedule. The fact that the Brazilian leader does not plan to participate in the meeting was also reported by Reuters.

Bolsonaro's administration told the newspaper that they had not received any information about the timing of the summit. Brazilian Vice President Amilton Mourán said Bolsonaro has not yet decided whether to attend the meeting.

The US authorities have not yet issued official invitations to the summit; The White House previously said they had not yet made a final decision on the guest list. A spokesman for the US National Security Council, who is helping organize the event, told the NYT that the upcoming summit— “the most important event for the Biden administration in our hemisphere,” and added that formal invitations would be sent out shortly. Both the NSC and the State Department declined to comment on boycott threats.

Summit of the Americas— organized under the auspices of the Organization of American States (OAS) meeting of the heads of state and government of America. Its goal is to form a common strategy in solving the problems facing the countries of the region. It was first held in 1994 in Miami. This year, the meeting is scheduled for June 6 & 10 in Los Angeles.

Maria Alyokhina

Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina left Russia disguised as a food delivery girl, writes The New York Times.

Alyokhina told the publication that she had to change into a food delivery uniform to hide from the police, who were watching the apartment where she was. According to her, she left her mobile phone in the apartment so that she would not be tracked. Then Alyokhina crossed the border with Belarus, from where she went to Lithuania.

Similarly, Lucy Shtein, a municipal deputy and member of Pussy Riot, was able to leave the country, the newspaper writes.

Alyokhina's departure was confirmed to TASS by her lawyer Daniil Berman. “Now she is not in Russia, she somehow left. I don’t know how she managed it, given the close surveillance that law enforcement agencies organized for her, & mdash; he said.

At the end of April, the Presnensky District Court of Moscow replaced the Pussy Riot participant with a 21-day prison sentence. “There was a cutting of an electronic bracelet, and they considered that this was a malicious failure to comply with a court decision,” — explained her lawyer.

Alyokhina was sentenced to a year of restriction of freedom in the so-called sanitary case in September 2021. The court found that she participated in inciting violations of sanitary standards at an unauthorized rally in support of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

NYT called the timing of the decision of the EU on the embargo on Russian oil

NYT: The EU may approve an embargo on Russian oil next week According to the publication's sources, this measure “divided the members of the bloc” and now there is an active discussion of the embargo. The newspaper notes that a decision can be made before the end of next week =”NYT announced the timing of the EU's decision on the embargo on Russian oil” />

The European Union is likely to approve a phased embargo on Russian oil next week. The New York Times reports this with reference to unnamed European officials.

The interlocutors of the publication noted that this measure had long been postponed and “divided the members of the bloc.” Intense negotiations will continue from April 30 to May 1, they said, before the European Commission possibly makes a decision.

Since the beginning of Russia's military operation in Ukraine, Western countries, including the US and the EU, have already imposed several packages of sanctions against Moscow. The EU introduced the previous, fifth package of restrictions on April 8.

The sanctions, among other things, banned the import and transit of coal from Russia, the export of printing paper, planting material, the supply of some turbines and engines, and particle accelerators. The restrictions also imply an extended ban on the import of petrochemical equipment, including for LNG projects.

The fact that the European Commission is preparing the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which implies restrictions on the oil sector, was said in mid-April by the head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen. As French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anne-Clair Legendre clarified on April 29, France expects the introduction of new EU sanctions against Russia, including restrictions on oil in the near future.

Three possible scenarios for Russian oil are being considered by the European Union in general, sources told Bloomberg: an embargo, a price cap, and the creation of a “payment mechanism to retain revenue.” , which Moscow has received since the start of the military special operation against Kyiv.

Head of the Russian Ministry of Finance Anton Siluanov said earlier that Russian oil production could fall by 17% this year, and it is still difficult to predict the future of energy sales from Russia. “Will there be a decrease in production? Will. In what volumes: 17%, a little less or a little more, — maybe»,— the official pointed out.

People in uniform were killed west of Kyiv during an ambush by Ukrainian forces, writes NYT, several people have their hands tied. The Investigative Committee previously reported on checks due to the killings of Russian servicemen whose hands were tied

A video of “the killing by the Ukrainian military of captured Russian soldiers” was circulated on the network, reports The New York Times, which reviewed the footage.

According to the newspaper, the video was filmed on March 30 on a road north of the village of Dmitrovka, located about 11 kilometers southwest of the town of Bucha in the Kiev region. Video footage shows at least four alleged Russian soldiers, according to The New York Times, three of them lying on the ground with no signs of life. They are dressed in camouflage, one has his hands tied behind his back, and three— white armbands used, according to the newspaper, by the Russian military. The alleged Ukrainian military on video footage notice that one of the men lying there is “still alive”, then one of the men shoots him three times, after which he stops showing signs of life.

The Ukrainian military can be distinguished by the patches with the country's flag and blue armbands, they say “Glory to Ukraine.” The publication notes that it remains unclear to which unit the standing men belong, but in the video one of them calls a group of people “the guys from Belgravia”. The New York Times suggests that the reference is to an apartment complex called Belgravia, which is located “several hundred yards from the scene.” According to the Yandex.Maps service, the Belgravia cottage settlement located in the north-east of the village of Dmitrovka.

In the video, which was distributed by Telegram channels, the dead soldiers lie on the road a few meters from the BMD-2 with the letter V painted on their side.

The New York Times writes that the killings took place, probably after Russia announced the withdrawal of forces from the cities of the Kiev region.

A fragment of the video was also published by the Ukrainian edition of UNIAN in Telegram. UNIAN reported that the footage— “Georgian Legion”, whose fighters “help Ukrainians in cleansing operations.”

In early March, the Russian state agency RIA Novosti with reference to an “authorized source” reported on the activities in Ukraine of the sabotage and reconnaissance group “Georgian National Legion”. According to the agency, it consists of 25 people, most of whom have Georgian citizenship.

“Field commander of the Georgian National Legion” is Mamulashvili Ushangi (Mamuka) Zurabovich, born in 1978»— clarified “authorized source” agencies. Mamulashvili, in an interview on YouTube, confirmed that the video depicts the military of the “Georgian Legion”, the Telegram channel Mash reported. On Mamulashvili's chest, a Georgian National Legion patch with the colors of the Ukrainian flag is visible.

“Georgian Legion” is part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Mamulashviliv said in mid-January 2018. He then indicated that the group included citizens of Georgia. The legion also noted that the name “Georgian Legion” was conditional for the volunteer movement in eastern Ukraine in 2014-2015, its members later transferred to the “volunteer unit called” Georgian Legion “, which was the 3rd company of the 25th battalion” Kievan Rus “.

At the beginning of January 2018, the Armed Forces of Ukraine denied the existence of the “Georgian Legion”, stating that such a brigade had never existed.

The Russian Defense Ministry last reported casualty data on March 25. Then the department reported that 1351 Russian servicemen had died in Ukraine since the beginning of the operation

In early April, the Investigative Committee of Russia began checking the circumstances of the murder of Russian military by Ukrainian “nationalists”, such an order was given by the head departments Alexander Bastrykin. “One of the dead has his hands tied behind his back, which indicates that the serviceman died not during a combat mission, but while already in captivity,” — said in the message. The UK indicated that the video showed a violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War. Bastrykin instructed to investigate the incident and identify those involved in the crime.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said during a briefing that she had seen the video, but could not confirm its authenticity. “I do not have any confirmation or assessment of the authenticity of the video or publication,” — she emphasized (quote from RIA Novosti).

NYT learned of Biden’s dissatisfaction with the absence of a case against Trump

NYT: Biden considers Trump a “threat to democracy” who should be charged According to the newspaper's sources, Biden complained in a private conversation that Trump was not prosecuted, although it should be prosecuted because of the storming of the Capitol by his supporters. During the assault, 5 people were killed

Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden has told those close to him that he believes it is necessary to hold former President Donald Trump accountable for the storming of the Capitol by his supporters early last year, The New York Times reported, citing two informed interlocutors.

Biden considers Trump a “threat to democracy,” the newspaper writes, in private conversations with his entourage at the end of last year, he expressed a desire that Attorney General Merrick Garland, who is handling the case of the storming of the Capitol, was ready to take drastic measures, and not behave like “ “clumsy judge”. At the same time, the American president did not express his position to Garland, the newspaper points out.

The Attorney General is also called for decisive action in the House of Representatives, the newspaper points out. Elaine Luria, member of the House Unrest Committee, said last week that the Justice Department should “act” fast. “Do your job so we can do ours,” — Luria said to Garland during a committee hearing.

Biden is confident that Garland “restored” independence of the US Department of Justice, White House spokesman Andrew Bates assured, the newspaper writes. “President Biden is immensely proud of the Attorney General's service in this administration and plays no role in the investigation's priorities or decisions,” he said.

Earlier this year, Biden accused Trump of trying to prevent a peaceful transition of power following the 2020 presidential election, pointing out that this led to riots in Washington and the storming of the Capitol. “For the first time in our history, a president didn't just lose an election, he tried to prevent a peaceful transfer of power when a violent mob stormed the Capitol,” he said.

According to Biden, Trump watched the riots from the White House that day, taking no action for several hours to stop the violence or storm the Capitol.

The storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters took place on January 6, 2021, they broke into the building during a meeting scheduled to approve the results of the presidential election. According to the results of the vote, then Biden won. The protesters expressed their disagreement with the results of the vote count, broke through the cordon, seized the Capitol and disrupted the meeting. Five people were killed during the clashes, Trump supporters were taken out of the Capitol building only a few hours later.

NYT learned of Biden’s plans to deploy troops, air force and navy in Europe

NYT: Biden considers deploying troops, air force and navy in Eastern Europe According to the publication, the US is considering expanding its military presence in the region amid growing fears due to Russian actions. Biden may decide to send up to 5,000 troops to Europe this week .jpg” alt=”NYT learned of Biden's plans to deploy troops, air force and navy in Europe” />

US President Joe Biden is considering deploying several thousand US military personnel, as well as ships and aircraft, to the Baltic countries and Eastern Europe, reports The New York Times, citing sources in the US administration. US officials consider expanding military presence in the region amid growing concerns about a possible “invasion” Russia to Ukraine, the newspaper writes.

On Saturday, January 22, at a meeting in the country residence of the US President Camp David, high-ranking Pentagon officials presented Biden with several options for action, the sources said. They include sending from 1,000 to 5,000 troops to Eastern European countries with the possibility of a “tenfold increase” their numbers if the situation worsens.

Biden is expected to make a decision this week, according to newspaper sources.

The publication clarifies that none of the options considered provides for the deployment of additional US troops on the territory of Ukraine itself.

The move, writes the NYT, will be a “turning point” for the administration of the American president, which up to this point had taken a low-key stance towards Ukraine, fearing to provoke Russia. But since talks between Russian and US officials failed, the administration decided to abandon that strategy.

Biden, speaking last week at a press conference marking a year in office, said the US would if necessary, are ready to increase the American military presence on the eastern flank of NATO— in Romania and Poland. He allowed this possibility in December, emphasizing that this would happen in the event of an “invasion”; Russia against Ukraine.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis welcomed Biden's announcement of an increase in the number of troops in the country in case “the security situation deteriorates further.”

Reports that Russia is preparing an attack on Ukraine, began to appear in the media last fall, and similar fears were expressed by the authorities of the United States, Germany and other countries. Moscow has repeatedly denied that it is developing such plans. Despite this, the Western countries threatened Russia with sanctions and announced the delivery of military aid to Ukraine.

NYT learned of Russia’s “hints” to deploy nuclear weapons closer to the United States

NYT: Russian diplomats in talks 'hint' about deploying missiles off US coast According to the NYT, in Geneva, Russian officials hinted at a readiness to deploy “certain weapons systems in unspecified locations” off US coasts in case of failure to comply with security guarantees

Intercontinental ballistic missile of strategic missile system “Avangard”

Russia's representatives, in a series of consultations with the US and NATO in Europe this week, conceded that if the West fails to meet its demands for security guarantees, the country could deploy nuclear weapons close to US borders. This is reported by The New York Times.

According to the newspaper, this is not about direct statements, but about “hints” to deploy nuclear missiles near the coast of the United States, which would reduce the time of approach to the target to five minutes.

RBC sent a request to the press center of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

As the newspaper writes, in negotiations with the United States in Geneva, Russia insisted that it had no plans to invade Ukraine. However, according to the article, the Russian side has hinted that it may take other steps. According to the NYT, a senior Russian diplomat admitted that “Moscow is ready to place some weapons systems in unspecified places.”

The publication notes that this coincides with the assumptions of American intelligence that Russia may consider the possibility of deploying new nuclear weapons— tactical nuclear weapons or hypersonic missiles.

At the same time, the newspaper does not rule out that we can talk about “intimidation”; from Russia.

The WSJ recalled President Vladimir Putin's November statement at the Russia Calling! forum. Then he said that at the beginning of 2022, the Zircon sea-based hypersonic missile would enter the country's armed forces. Her flight time “to those who give orders” to NATO would be five minutes, he said. According to the head of state, such weapons in the country began to be created in response to threats from the alliance.

The Pentagon previously called the tests of “Zircon” a threat and a “destabilizing factor”, since this weapon system, according to the US military, can carry a nuclear charge.

At the end of December, Putin said that Russia's response in the event that NATO countries refuse to consider proposals for security guarantees can be “very different”, it depends on the proposals of military experts. On January 13, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, in an interview with RTVI, allowed the deployment of Russian troops in Cuba or in Venezuela. According to him, the decision depends on “the actions of American colleagues,” although Moscow does not want such a development of the situation. “If Russia were moving in this direction, we would decisively deal with this,” — US presidential adviser Jake Sullivan said in response.

Negotiations between Russia and the United States on security guarantees were held in Geneva on January 9–10, and on January 12 a meeting of the Russia— Council took place in Brussels; NATO.

All parties rated the meetings as businesslike and useful. At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, following the results of the talks, declared that NATO was completely incapable of negotiating. US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman called unacceptable some of Russia's proposals regarding refusal to admit Ukraine and Georgia to NATO and move the alliance eastward.

US intelligence warned European allies that 'there is little time left'; in order to prevent Russia from starting hostilities in Ukraine, The New York Times reported citing sources.

This is the price you pay for defending Palestinian human rights against an Israeli government whose actions in Palestine both Human Rights Watch and the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem accuse of persecution and discrimination.I take this stance because I believe that everyone — Jews, Muslims and Christians — have the right to live in peace as equal citizens of a state they choose. The World Values Network are shamelessly using my name to advance their ugly campaign with falsehoods and blatant misrepresentation of who I am and what I stand for. I stand in solidarity with all oppressed people and reject all forms of racism.”
