Till is a biopic based on the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley, mother of Emmett Till. It stars Danielle Deadwyler in the lead role as she pursues justice for her teenage son, brutally lynched in Mississippi in 1955, later going on to become a major voice in the civil rights movement. Sullivan’s lyrics reflect that journey as she sings “Get up and keep forward. See, don’t back away with your hand up. ‘Cause somebody needs you to stand up.”

[Heaux Tales ended up being] "a safe space for Black women to tell their stories, for us to learn from each other, laugh with each other, and not be exploited … shout out to all Black women who are just living their lives and being beautiful." – Jazmine Sullivan at the #GRAMMYspic.twitter.com/n2oVPzd2gL
Jazmine Sullivan‘s Heaux Tales won the award for Best R&B album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. The project beat albums by Snoh Aalegra (Temporary Highs in the Violet Skies), Jon Batiste (We Are), Leon Bridges (Gold-Diggers Sound), and H.E.R. (Back of My Mind).
In her acceptance speech, Sullivan spoke about the album’s creation as “a safe space for Black women to tell their stories, for us to learn from each other, laugh with each other, and not be exploited.” Watch her acceptance below.

Mo’Tales sports ten new tracks including five interludes. Issa Rae, the creator of HBO’s Insecure, will appear on the project along with comedian Mona Love. “Tragic,” a new song released in November, is also slated for the deluxe.
Jazmine Sullivan has announced that a deluxe version of her stellar Grammy-nominated EP Heaux Tales is on the way. Heaux Tales, Mo’ Tales: The Deluxe will be released on February 11 via RCA Records. The amount of new material that will be added has not yet been revealed. However, Variety reports that “Tragic,” which was released in June 2021 following the release of Heaux Tales, will be included on the deluxe edition.

Sullivan’s 25-city North American tour in support of Heaux Tales kicks off in February and will go until the end of March.

The 2021 BET Awards took place on Sunday, June 27 with a raft of live performers hitting the stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Tyler, The Creator battled a faux windstorm as he debuted “Lumberjack” from his new album Call Me If You Get Los. Megan Thee Stallion, meanwhile, ran through “Thot Shit” flanked by an army of dancers. You can see their performances, plus appearanes by Lil Nas X, DaBaby, City Girls, and a tribute to the late DMX from Swizz Beatz, The Lox, and Method Man.

Jazmine Sullivan was the musical guest on last night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where she performed “Pick Up Your Feelings” from an empty ballroom. Backed by a full band and background singers, Sullivan’s live take sounded as pristine as the version on her recent EP Heaux Tales, which dropped back in January.
Each week, The FADER staff rounds up the songs we can’t get enough of. Here they are, in no particular order.

“One Step Closer” — Linkin Park (100 gecs Reanimation)
The raw, messy emotion of Linkin Park’s breakout song “One Step Closer” is a natural fit for the cranked-to-11 pop grist mill that is 100 gecs. Hearing their reverent take on the song, a remix infused with sprinkling rave synths and death metal grunts, you’re reminded of how Linkin Park set the stage for bands like the gecs.

“Night” — Planet 1999 (DJ lostboi remix)
A recurring motif of DJ lostboi’s music is the sound of a tape rewinding; the machine’s whirring heightens the feeling of cycling back through memory. There’s an almost voyeuristic vibe to the remix’s production, where vocals are processed into balmy atmospheres as an emo guitar fingerpicks in the distance. lostboi sounds like she’s plugged into someone’s brain trying to tap into a recollection of the original song, but it’s been clouded by the slow-motion fireworks of other synapses.
“Reason To Believe” — Vagabon feat. Courtney Barnett
Being wrapped around someone’s pinkie finger can be both exhilarating and devastating. This Americana ballad from Vagabon and Courtney Barnett captures that particular strain of exhaustion without losing appreciation for its own beating heart.
“BIPP” — SOPHIE (Autechre remix)
A press release tells us that when SOPHIE dropped her dance floor-shattering “BIPP,” in 2015, she rejected the idea of any remix unless Autechre was behind it. Six years later, the Warp-signed experimental legends have delivered. The original hyperactive, puppy-lovesick atmosphere is dimmed considerably: the drums are massive, yet lumber like they’ve been laced with nightshade, while the vocals are crisp and center stage, like one might hear in a top 40 playlist. It’s a dystopian banger that lets you cuddle up to it.

“Believer” — Smerz
Back in 2018, Smerz debuted with the mixtape Have Fun, a noisy sample collage refracted a similar wry, muddy lens as Hype Williams. The title track of their upcoming debut album doubles down on the Norwegian duo’s appreciation for pop without losing its experimental elements — think Billie Eilish, but more Björk.
“Hardline” — Julien Baker
Baker has the kind voice that stays in your ear long after the sound has passed through it: weighty with a cutting message, resonating like it traveled over a mountain to get to you. “Hardline” has instrumentation to match, with one of the biggest choruses of the indie singer-songwriter’s career. It’s post-rock, it’s shoegaze, it’s pure catharsis.
“CLOSER TO THE FIRE” — B L A C K I E
His long-awaited comeback arrived last year, but Houston noise-rapper B L A C K I E isn’t ready to take his foot off of America’s neck just yet. “CLOSER TO THE FIRE” opens his new album FACE THE DARKNESS II with a flurry of saxophone noise, vengeful samples, and righteous fury.

“Use Somebody” (Kings of Leon Cover) — dvsn
Miley Cyrus gets all the attention for her covers, but with just one song dvsn have made a convincing play for her throne. The duo’s upcoming album Amusing Her Feelings probably doesn’t consist of dvsn turning insufferable mid-noughties hits into this kind of brooding, sleek bedroom music, but I’m looking forward to it nonetheless.
“Chemtrails Over The Country Club” — Lana Del Rey
Listen, I wasn’t thrilled with Lana’s weirdly defensive statement about her album cover either, but let’s not pretend that she doesn’t know how to write a song. Though its title makes me think of the restless suburban moms who read Goop and follow QAnon, “Chemtrails” is a collection of quiet elements combining to burst with life and a passion that’s no pseudoscience or conspiracy.
“The Other Side” — Jazmine Sullivan
We don’t usually put an artist in the Songs You Need playlist two weeks in a row, but the new Jazmine Sullivan project is just that good. “The Other Side” neatly captures the musical skill and narrative heft that makes Heaux Tales so excellent: the song’s narrator despairs at her economic plight, and dreams of glamourous life reflected back at her by celebrities on Instagram and reality TV shows. But a literal reading of the lyrics doesn’t do justice to the pure yearning conveyed in Sullivan’s vocal performance and her swelling instrumentation.
After the longing and self-reflection of “Lost One,” released back in August, Jazmine Sullivan returns with another cut from her upcoming EP, the soulful “Pick Up Your Feelings.” Where “Lost One” saw the singer pleading for a love that doesn’t leave her behind, “Pick Up Your Feelings” is the self-assured send-off when things completely fall apart.

“New phone, Who is this? / Contact, don’t exist / Need a ride? Call that bitch / Gas way too expensive,” Sullivan sings on the track. Sullivan is currently working on a still-unnamed EP due later this year. It would serve as a follow up to her 2015 project Reality Show.
[Verse 1]
Started off poor with plans to earn more
Now we own stores and fuck the baddest whores
I was on tour with niggas that sold raw
Started sellin’ white, we won’t sell it no more
I’m like, Trump ain’t feelin’ us, cops still killin’ us
Niggas takin’ shots, can’t stop me, they ain’t real enough
Cut her off, act like she’s dead and it’s killin’ her
New dawn, Hermes seat, I let the ceiling up
Just to get to kill ’em softly
Ooh, get them off me, try to crucify me
Like I’m Jesus the way she cross me
I’m too bossy and too thorough to move like a weirdo
On point like an arrow, we started off with zero
Now I’m seeing M’s, diamonds like water and they jumping out the gym
Shooting like Harden if your head was the rim
‘Cause niggas wanna line me like a shape up in the trim, damn
[Refrain]
Back when I was broke, they was cool with it
Now every move I make, I’m in the news with it
Even if I ain’t do it, they be like, you did it
My teacher always used to tell me you gon’ lose nigga
That’s why I never went to school nigga
And why I’m rappin’ like I got something to prove nigga
Went and bought the mansion with the pool in it
Billy with the stamp, I get two with it’
[Verse 2]
Move with it ’cause these niggas wanna take my life
No weapon formed against me, every time I pray at night
Scoopin’ thotties in the Phantom, that’s the way of life
And make them fuck their best friends like they was dykes
Reaching for the Glock, every time I play the light
I’m on 12 o’clock, every time I play them bikes
I’m with the pack, huh
Getting back, yeah
Spend dope, nigga
Selling smack, gang
I’m gettin’ chips off music like Rap Snacks
Yeah, 10 mil in cash of Ethika that’s a fact
Money, power, respect
Eating breakfast on a jet
I know these niggas upset
They ain’t see me fall yet
Wins and losses
[Chorus]
They wanna see me fall
And I will never sell my soul
I’m on some shit that they ain’t seen before
Dream chasin’, catchin’ all my goals
I don’t need these hoes
I’m gettin’ money, me and all my woes
Play with me, you know is all out war
The young niggas goin’ all out for us
[Verse 3]
Bloggers in the frenzy, truck to the Bentley
Ain’t doing no interviews, I’m busy, nigga we litty
So when you see me out don’t ask me about no Nicki
Fuck I look like tellin’ my business on Wendy
Niggas gossip like queens, we was servin’ fiends
.40 bust your windows out, Jazmine Sullivan
They told ’em pop Mollys, I told ’em to be kings
Sipping 1942 like it’s lean
I done seen all these niggas try to down play my dreams
So I’ma give it to ’em every time I’m on the scene
Pull up, Ghost, Ghost, Wraith, Wraith when you see me
Some suckers wanna be me and some suckers wanna live me, I know it
I go through it, don’t’ show it
I told niggas who wrote it, ain’t taking back what I quoted
Started off with a quarter, flipped that to a half, turned that to an ounce
Got some shit in the stash, nigga say that he gon’ rob me, put a brick on his ass
Now every killer in my city tryna look for his ass
And one thing ’bout Meek Milly, I’ma get to a bag
Had to starve all day just to get to it fast
Like Ramadan, totin’ K’s like it’s Palestine
Real niggas in my ambiance, bottom line
Ever since I met Ross and signed a dotted line
I gave my mama ten thousand at least a thousand times
Do the math on it
[Chorus]
They wanna see me fall
And I will never sell my soul
I’m on some shit that they ain’t seen before
Dream chasin’, catchin’ all my goals
I don’t need these hoes
I’m gettin’ money, me and all my woes
Play with me, you know is all out war
The young niggas goin’ all out for us
[Verse 4]
Talking, this my cocky flow
Damn Daniel, why you selling Mr. Miyagi though
This that rose gold Patek, call me like ’94
Mean nothin’ to me, I tell how I gotta go rain slick
On that corner when the block was slow
Everybody was tryna trap, we started poppin’ though
Heard that bitch say she cut me, I was like adiós
In the field, knock ’em down, it look like dominoes, young nigga
I turn my Impala to a Wraith, when you get a dollar they gon’ hate
Bought my mom the crib with that gate
Private school for all them babies
Now they straight, nigga
[Chorus]
They wanna see me fall
And I will never sell my soul
I’m on some shit that they ain’t seen before
Dream chasin’, catchin’ all my goals
I don’t need these hoes
I’m gettin’ money, me and all my woes
Play with me, you know is all out war
The young niggas goin’ all out for us
