Babyface Ray is this week’s guest on The FADER Interview. With MOB — his second LP of the year following January’s FACE — due out this Friday (December 2), the Detroit emcee sat down with Brandon Callender for a wide-ranging conversation.

Ray has been grinding for a full decade, repping his city and his scene with a steady stream of no-frills reality raps. But he only started receiving national attention in 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic. (After 10 years in the rap game, Ray was granted a somewhat ironic spot in this year’s XXL Freshman Class.) Still, he’s not mad at the world for sleeping on him for so long. Rather, he appreciates the recognition he’s brought to Michigan’s thriving rap scene, and to his city’s newfound influence on hip-hop the world across. A constant champion of new music, he shouted out some of his favorite young rappers pushing Detroit’s raw swagger forward during the recent interview.

In the following excerpt, Brandon commends Ray for promoting new artists on his socials. Ray throws a few extra names in the pot and explains his not-entirely unselfish reasoning for putting the next generation on.

I really appreciate how you’re always shouting out the younger generation of artists and tryna put them on. A few days ago on your IG stories, you shouted out Shaudy Kash, Samuel Shabazz, and the World Tour Mafia guys.

Don’t forget about 44 Tez. I shouted him out too. That’s that raw you just was talking about. King Hendricks too. I feel like it’s important because this is the music I’m listening to, so why not shout ’em out? I ain’t gonna hide it. I know the world don’t know what’s going on, and I know my platform’s much bigger. So a shoutout might lead to them being able to put food on the plate for their family. If I can do that, that’s a great thing, and they’re always gonna remember that. I’m going right now, but I might not always be going, so you’ve gotta make sure you plant some type of seeds for the future.

Babyface Ray has announced a new album called MOB, due out December 2 via Wavy Gang/EMPIRE. The record will follow January’s FACE — which won the veteran Detroit emcee a spot in this year’s XXL freshman class — as Ray’s second album of the year. It will include the previously released singles “Nice Guy” (shared in October) and “Spend It,” the latter track arriving last week and featuring Blxst and Nija.

News of the forthcoming project comes with a tongue-in-cheek trailer in which a group of stuffy execs focus group the record to a select group of uniformly enthusiastic fans. Watch it above.

His second album of the year is coming soon, title and release date TBA.

Detroit emcee Babyface Ray has shared a new track titled “Spend It” featuring Los Angeles rapper/singer Blxst and New Jersey-born, L.A.-based R&B queen Nija. Per a press release, it’s a harbinger of more to come from Face, who dropped FACE earlier this year and has since shared a deluxe edition of the project. A new album, according to the release, is arriving soon, with details to be announced “in the coming days.”

“Spend It” is a straightforward song about splurging on loved ones. It’s got a poppier vibe than most of Face’s previous work, but his nasty bars keep the cut from crossing over into saccharine territory. (“I love when you sit it on me / Dick in yo guts while I’m kissin’ yo feet,” he raps, describing a sexual scenario that is, all elements combined, somewhat difficult to picture.)

Babyface Ray has released a deluxe edition of his recent album FACE. The new expansion adds eight tracks to the record and features from Veeze, Lil Yachty, Lucki, and Baroline. Ray has also dropped a video for “Family Over Money,” one of the new songs added with the deluxe. Check out the video and full album stream below.

“Family Over Money” is the kind of fly talking track that Ray is best at — somber, reflective, and unafraid to do a little cathartic flexing. “Hope you know that shit around for real, we ain’t playin’ rich / Half a milli for a townhouse, why I’m staying in,” he raps.

It’s safe to assume that “Neck & Wrist” will appear on the upcoming full-length album from Pusha T. “I got three songs with [JAY-Z] now,” Pusha T said in a February interview with Gillie Da Kid and Wallo for the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast. “I send him shit ’cause I know he gonna say shit that I just can’t say. To me, that’s what be wild impressive.”

The Virginia rapper shared a new single called “Diet Coke” in February along with a Kanye West-featuring video. He’s showed up for features this year on songs from Babyface Ray (“Dancing With The Devil” from FACE) and Nigo (“Hear Me Clearly” from I Know NIGO!).

Pusha T’s manager denies rumors of rapper leaving G.O.O.D. Music
Speculation on Push leaving Ye’s label stemmed from a cryptic Thursday Instagram post.

A Thursday Instagram post from Pusha T showed the final page of a contract between the rapper and Def Jam Recordings, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc., accompanied by a crytpic caption: “Some people call you their brother, other people show you you’re BROTHERS,” Push wrote. “Thanx ‘Yezos…’ @kanyewest.”

The post led to speculation that Push had been amicably released from Ye‘s label, G.O.O.D. Music, where he’s served as president since 2015. He started his own label, Heir Wave Music Group, in February 2020, but stayed on as G.O.O.D.’s rapper-in-chief.

But in a report published by Complex this afternoon, Push’s manager — and G.O.O.D.’s COO — Steve Victor denied the rumors and said the post had been misconstrued.

According to Victor, the photo of the contract was merely a confirmation that Push’s forthcoming album will fulfill his obligation to Def Jam and Universal Music Group, and the thank-you note to Ye is for giving Push full ownership of his masters.

“[He’s still with] G.O.O.D. Music, he’s just not signed to Def Jam anymore,” Victor said. Def Jam and UMG are parent companies of G.O.O.D.

The FADER has reached out to representatives of Pusha T, G.O.O.D. Music, and Def Jam/UMG for further comment on the situation.

Pusha T was recently featured on “Dancing With The Devil,” the lead single from Babyface Ray‘s new album, FACE, out today. And a snippet of a new Push song, presumably a feature on Nigo‘s forthcoming record, I know NIGO, was played at the Japanese producer/designer’s show at Paris Fashion Week Sunday.

Babyface Ray has shared the full, stacked lineup of producers and guest performers for his forthcoming album, FACE, out this Friday on Wavy Gang and EMPIRE. The record will feature bars from Pusha T, Yung Lean, Icewear Vezzo, Wiz Khalifa, G Herbo, 42 Dugg, and Landstrip Chip, and beats from 808 Mafia, Esco, and more.

Along with the album details, the Detroit rapper dropped a new track titled “Sincerely Face” today, pairing his relentless rhymes with a woozy piano beat from Flea Diamonds. Its video finds Ray rapping onstage, in the studio, on the roof of a parking garage, and in the sideview mirror of Range Rover that changes colors from black to white and back.
