Amaarae has shared details of a new studio album and dropped the first single. “Reckless & Sweet” will appear on Fountain Baby, which is due later this year. An official release date for the album, the follow-up to 2020’s The Angel You Don’t Know, is unconfirmed at the time of writing. Check out the “Reckless & Sweet” video, starring models Leomie Anderson and Monyjok Ngor Deng, below.

In a statement, Amaarae said of the new single: “Coming back after so long, I had a lot of time to think and reflect on what I wanted my message to be. Last time it was about confidence, this time it’s about love and faith. This is my sexiest video to date, and what I love most about it is that young Black women and men are about to see what our new energy is for 2023 and beyond. Moving forward, we’re grown and sexy. We’re going to make sure we always look our best, talk our best, walk our best, and most of all we’re bringing love and romance back! ‘Reckless & Sweet’ is a sexy song. It’s about being intentional with the ways we make and give love. It’s about finding the inner sensuality and confidence without yourself and sharing that with the world. As an artist that is exactly where I’m at at the moment.”

The Angel You Don’t Know featured the single “Sad Girlz Love Money,” which went viral on TikTok and was re-released with a Kali Uchis feature a year after its release. Last year Amaarae appeared on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack.

The 95th Academy Awards took place on Sunday night with Everything Everywhere All At Once proving to be the night’s biggest winner. The A24 movie took home seven awards in total, including Best Picture alongside acting prizes for cast members Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known collectively as the Daniels, were named Best Director.

Away from EEAAO sweeping the board, the three and a half hour ceremony was broken up by a number of musical performances. Lady Gaga appeared in stripped back fashion, wiping off her red carpet look to perform Top Gun: Maverick song “Hold My Hand” in a black t-shirt and jeans. Rihanna, meanwhile, followed up her appearance at the Super Bowl last month with another high profile spot. She was on hand to perform her comeback single “Lift Me Up,” as heard on the soundtrack to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Arguably the highlight of the night, however, was Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava singing their RRR song “Naatu Naatu” backed by an army of dancers. The movie went on to make history as the first Indian feature film to win an Oscar, with “Naatu Naatu” composer and lyricist, M.M. Keeravaani and Chandrabose picking up Best Original Song.

The NBA All-Star Game arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah on Sunday evening, and alongside a basketball game featuring the NBA’s best players, viewers were treated to performances from some similarly talented artists, as well as Post Malone. Burna Boy, Rema, and Tems each took the stage for the evening’s musical showcase, with Post Malone performing at the pre-game tip-off event with some help from 21 Savage.

The half-time show celebrated some of the Nigerian artists who have gone on to global pop stardom. For his set, Burna Boy performed two songs from his Grammy-nominated album Love, Damini, “It’s Plenty” and “Last Last,” our favorite song of 2022, with “Alone” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also included. Rema took the stage with his massive smash “Calm Down” and “Holiday,” and Tems – fresh off her first Grammy win for Best Melodic Rap Performance on “Wait For U” with Drake and Future – gave spirited renditions of “Crazy Tings,” “Free Mind,” “Essence,” and “Higher.” Post Malone took on “Wow.” and “Rockstar” before the game, enlisting 21 Savage to perform his verse on their hit.

Rihanna returned to the stage for her first live performance in five years during the 2023 Super Bowl Haltime Show on Sunday, with a representative confirming after that the singer is pregnant with her second child. This makes her the first artist to play the Super Bowl Halftime Show while pregnant.

With just 13 minutes to play with during the break between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles at Arizona’s State Farm Stadium, Rihanna opened her performance with “Bitch Better Have My Money.” Despite the high profile nature of the Super Bowl appearance, Rihanna wouldn’t have been paid for her appearance. Cost of production for the show, however, is thought to be well over $10 million.

Watched on by partner A$AP Rocky, the father of her first child born in May 2022, Rihanna performed hits including “Diamonds,” “Umbrella,” “Run This Town,” “Work,” and more. She opted against any guest stars, instead focusing on her many hits and an ambitious stage show including floating stages and an army of white hooded dancers.

Speaking during a pre-Bowl press conference, she said last week that she had changed the setlist over 30 times in the run-up to the show as well as suggesting she is continuing to work on new music. Rihanna’s last album, ANTI, dropped in 2016. Last year she returned with “Lift Me Up,” as heard of the soundtrack to Marvel movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Guvna B heeds advice from Michaela Coel on the pained “Bridgeland Road”

Guvna B heeds advice from Michaela Coel on the pained “Bridgeland Road”
The London artist’s tenth album The Village Is On Fire is out in May.

By David Renshaw

January 26, 2023

Guvna B is a creative whose work has led him through music, writing, fashion, podcasting, and even a stint in sports broadcasting. Though his lanes of work have been varied, musically the London-born artist has focused mainly on gospel – winning multiple MOBO Awards for his work in that lane. On new album The Village is On Fire, however, Guvna B is changing things up and dipping his toe into a range of different sounds and styles. Long time friend Ghetts brings the energy of grime to “U Get Me?” while the omnipresent sound of afrobeats in his home city is reflected on “Amplify.”

The album is not just a chance to experiment musically, however. The catalyst for Guvna B’s tenth album came following an unprovoked attack in which he was harmed not just by the perpetrator but also in the struggle to get justice through the legal system. Speaking to his cousin Michaela Coel, star of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and creator of the Emmy-winning I May Destroy You, she told him the best way to deal with feelings of frustration is to write about them.

“Bridgeland Road,” premiering below, establishes the tone for an album that takes a zoomed out look at where the fractures in our communities begin and how best to heal them. It’s a deeply personal song about that racially motivated attack in 2021 that begins with Guvna B recalling his days as a child in east London and the efforts his family put in to raise him, as well as the reality of having to help them with the rent. There’s a swing to the drums and low basslines that are deceiving, the vibe may be smooth but what he has to say is clearly still raw. “Wrong place, wrong time,” he says as the song opens up. “Pain by the blade of a long knife.” Coel’s voice appears via voicemail, speaking directly to her cousin after seeing a picture of him after the attack. “I am livid,” she tells him. It feels strange hearing such a private moment aired like this but the point is clear, nothing is secret from here on in.

Speaking via email, Guvna B told The FADER: “What I experienced was tough to deal with and my mind was loaded with nuanced thoughts around race, identity and the structures which contribute to shaping society.

“Michaela reminded me that art isn’t just for others to consume, but it’s also a processing tool for ourselves. She encouraged me to write about what happened and the result is not only this song, but an album that provided me with the closure I desperately needed.

I’m really proud of it and I hope it helps people to think about how they can positively impact the world around them.”

The video for “Bridgeland Road,” featuring Guvna B making his way through the streets of London surrounded by memories of his past, can be seen below. The Village is On Fire is out May 26.

Sade and Snoop Dogg have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Listed in SHOF’s official announcement as Sade Adu p/k/a Sade and Calvin Broadus Jr. p/k/a Snoop Dogg, their names sit alongside those of five other 2023 inductees: Alanis Morissette co-writer Glen Ballard, Cuban-American diva Gloria Estefan, longtime ELO leader Jeff Lynne, new jack swing pioneer Teddy Riley, and Nashville top-liner Liz Rose — best known for her collaborations with Taylor Swift — fill out this year’s list.

“The music industry does not exist without songwriters delivering great songs first,” Nile Rogers, SHOF’s chairman and a 2016 inductee himself, wrote in the Hall’s official announcement of the 2023 class. “Without them, there is no recorded music, no concert business, no merch… nothing, it all starts with the song and the songwriter. We are therefore very proud that we are continually recognizing some of the culturally most important songwriters of all time and that the 2023 slate represents not just iconic songs but also diversity and unity across genres, ethnicity, and gender, songwriters who have enriched our lives and, in their time, literally transformed music and the lives of billions of listeners all over the world.”

Apple Music has shared a video celebrating Rihanna’s return to music in promotion of her upcoming performance.

Apple Music has released its first trailer for the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show, starring Rihanna. Titled “Rihanna Is Back,” the clip is a celebration of RiRi’s return to music and a teaser of her February 12 performance at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona.

In the video, she poses on a brightly illuminated runway, surrounded by a sea of darkness. Audio clips of impatient talking heads bemoaning her lack of musical output over the last six years compile in the background, merging into a single, buzzing drone until she silences them with a finger to the lips. A five-second snippet of her 2016 hit “Needed Me” plays as the Apple Music logo enters the screen, fade to black. Watch the trailer above.

Rihanna has released two songs — “Lift Me Up” and “Born Again” — since being announced as this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner, both for the soundtrack of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Fans expecting a full project from the Barbadian diva this year, however, may be disappointed. She poured cold water on album rumors in November, stating in an Associated Press interview that the “Super Bowl is one thing, new music is another thing.” With a successful fashion brand to mind and an eight-month-old to raise with A$AP Rocky, Rihanna has plenty on her plate already.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the nominees for the 2023 Golden Globe Awards on Monday morning. Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift all received nominations in the “Best Original Song – Motion Picture” category.

Rihanna’s song “Lift Me Up” was the lead single for the Marvel superhero blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Gaga’s song “Hold My Hand” appeared in Top Gun: Maverick, the colossal Tom Cruise-led sequel that’s become one of the top-grossing films of all time. “Carolina,” a song released by Swift ahead of her 2022 album midnights, can be heard in the film Where the Crawdads Sing. The category’s dark horse — and my personal favorite — is “Naatu Naatu,” a song composed by Rahul Sipligunj, Kaala Bhairava and M.M. Keeravani from the widely-lauded Tollywood epic RRR.

Bloody Civilian moves through adversity in her “How To Kill A Man” video

Bloody Civilian moves through adversity in her “How To Kill A Man” video
The Nigerain artist shares the self-directed video for her debut solo single.

By David Renshaw

December 09, 2022

When the star-studded Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack dropped alongside the movie last month there was one name on the tracklist that was a little bit more of a mystery than Rihanna, Burna Boy, Tems et al. Appearing alongside Rema on the funky and dark “Wake Up” was Nigerian artist Bloody Civilian. She followed that big time debut with her own solo single “How To Kill A Man,” a video for which is premiering on The FADER today.

“How To Kill A Man” is a tongue in cheek exercise in venting rage without technically harming anyone, man or otherwise. “I got many problems,” Bloody sings as she cites her siblings as knowing all about her woes. Turning her attention to the root of those problems she threatens to bury them “six feet under” before repeating the line “Go down, down go down, down.” It’s dramatic and confessional, with the rich and seductive beat pulling you in closer as the threats intensify.

Speaking to The FADER via email, Bloody Civilian says the video was her chance “to show power — to show women’s power. In the visuals you see women of all ages and walks of life, coming together in times of adversity.

“There’s a lot you can do with a group of people and with the help of your community, but in the end there are some journeys you have to walk alone. And that’s how this video ends, with the character alone.”

Rihanna has poured cold water on the idea that her upcoming appearance at next year’s Super Bowl means she must have a new album ready to go. Anticipation about Rihanna’s long-awaited ninth studio album, #R9 to Navy acolytes, reached a fever pitch when it was confirmed that she will headline the 2023 Super Bowl, however, speaking in a new interview Rihanna suggested that might not be the case.

Asked in a new Assosciated Press interview if the Super Bowl performance meant her next album is finished, Rihanna was quick to shut it down. “That’s not true,” she said. “Super Bowl is one thing. New music is another thing. Do you hear that, fans?” By “new music” she presumably means more than recent Black Panther: Wakanda Forever single “Lift Me Up.”

Rihanna went on to add that she knew the speculation would go into overdrive with news of her first live appearance in six years. “The second that I announced this, I said, ‘Oh, my God, they’re going to think my album is coming. I need to get to work.'”

Speaking about why she chose to take on the Super Bowl gig, having turned it down in 2019 in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, Rihanna remained a little vague. “If I’m going to leave my baby, I’m going to leave my baby for something special,” she said. Adding: “It was now or never for me. It was a challenge that I welcomed. It was a stage bigger than anything I’ve ever done,” she said.

Rihanna spoke ahead of her latest Savage X Fenty lingerie show,, due to take place later this week. Last week it was announced that Johnny Depp will make a controversial guest appearance during the show.

Rihanna has returned with “Lift Me Up,” the lead single from the soundtrack to Marvel’s upcoming film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It is the pop star’s first solo single since releasing her eighth studio album Anti in 2016. The song was co-written by Rihanna, Tems, Ludwig Göransson, and Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler and pays tribute Chadwick Boseman, the original Black Panther star who passed away in 2020.

Announced just this week, Rihanna’s return to music has been the subject of much discussion, speculation, and fan frustration. She initially began recording a reggae album, reportedly recording over 500 songs for the project with collaborators that included Pharrell and Koffee (Shaggy was reportedly asked to audition). However, soon after the birth of her first child in 2022, she told Vogue that she was looking at the project “entirely differently.”

The massive success of Rihanna’s Fenty brand led some to believe that music had taken a backseat, though she dismissed that idea in a 2020 interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I am always working on music,” she said, “and when I am ready to put it out in the way that I feel fit, it’s gonna come out.”

Rihanna hasn’t been entirely absent from music since releasing Anti. She had a run of features on some hugely successful singles in 2017, appearing on “Wild Thoughts“ by DJ Khaled and “Loyalty“ by Kendrick Lamar, the latter winning Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. She also featured on “Lemon,” the comeback single from N.E.R.D., and Future’s “Selfish.” She went quiet till 2020 when PARTYNEXTDOOR enlisted her for the single “Believe It.”

The official trailer for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has arrived. The long-awaited follow-up to the original Black Panther — a 2018 Ryan Coogler-directed blockbuster starring Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan and soundtracked in part by Kendrick Lamar — is scheduled for a November 11 release in theaters nationwide. It will star returning cast members such as Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and Winston Duke, as well as Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, who plays a new character introduced in the trailer as Namor, “the Feathered Serpent God” who rules the underwater kingdom of Talocan.

Wakanda Forever is the 30th film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking place after the death of King T’Challa, the title character portrayed by Boseman in the first film. Boseman died in August 2020 of complications from colon cancer, and the Black Panther franchise decided not to replace him in the role.

On Saturday, Marvel Studios dropped a teaser for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the long-awaited Black Panther sequel set to premiere nationwide in November. Marvel has now shared the Wakanda Forever Prologue EP, a three-track sampler curated by the film score’s composer, Ludwig Göransson. It opens with a cover of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ iconic “No Woman No Cry” by Nigerian singer Tems, a rendition that plays during the recently released preview. The other two tracks are from Ghanaian artist Amaarae and Santa Fe Klan, a rapper from Guanajuato, Mexico.

The first Black Panther movie, released in 2018 and starring Chadwick Boseman in its titular role, featured a stacked soundtrack curated by Kenrick Lamar. Production of the forthcoming film was stalled when Boseman died tragically of colon cancer in 2020. It finally wrapped in late March of this year. Other than the new tape, no information has been released regarding its music.

“This Prologue is an aural first glimpse of Wakanda Forever. The sound world for the film began with extended trips to Mexico and Nigeria. We spent our days working with traditional musicians who educated us about the cultural, social, and historical contexts of their music. We built a catalogue of instrumental and vocal recordings with them that explored both traditional and non-traditional uses of their musical material. During the nights on these trips, we had recording sessions with contemporary artists who were akin to the characters and thematic material explored in the film. Using the script as a blueprint, along with the recordings from the traditional musicians, we began to build a musical vocabulary for the characters, storylines and cultures. The instrumental score and soundtrack for Wakanda Forever both organically grew from these sessions and workshops. They are conceived together as a singular entity to create an immersive and enveloping sound world for the film.”

Can neva buy me no my soul not to take
My fist up in the air and im thinking about my heros
Kobe’s now gone now im thinking about my little
Mike Jack swag got me singing in falsetto
Chadwick Boseman dressed up like a hero
Black Panther dressed up like Huey Newton

Im a king , I never been a nigga
Im a king , I never been a nigga
Im a king , I never been a nigga
Neva dun trip by the shit they say
Can’t buy me my soul not to take
Neva dun trip by the shit they say
Can’t buy me my soul not to take
My life is complicated, a little bit of this and a little bit of that
My life is complicated, a little bit of this and a little bit of that
My life is complicated, a little bit of this and a little bit of that
My life is complicated, a little bit of this and a little bit of that

Think of you like all day
You were in my face like always
I don’t say that to complain
You were the best kind of pain
I don’t know where I go now
If I did I wouldn’t know how
Might still feel the same things
I don’t say that to complain
Think of you like all day
You were in my face like always
I don’t say that to complain
You were the best kind of pain
I don’t know where I go now
If I did I wouldn’t know how
Might still feel the same things
I don’t say that to complain
