Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong says he’s renouncing his American citizenship after Roe V. Wade reversal

Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman of the pop-punk group Green Day, declared his intention to renounce his American citizenship after the Supreme Court removed a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion by overturning Roe V Wade.

“F**k America,” Armstrong said during a concert in London, England on Friday evening. “I’m f***king renouncing my citizenship. I’m f**king coming here.” He added that there’s “…too much f**king stupid in the world to go back to that miserable f**king excuse for a country.”

Armstrong has long criticized right-wing politics. American Idiot, Green Day’s 2004 megahit LP, was a concept album inspired in part by the administration of President George W. Bush. The song’s lead single went to No. 1 in the United Kingdom in advance of a visit by President Donald Trump. After Trump’s false claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election, Armstrong said the former president was “holding half of the country hostage.”

Other musicians used their stages this weekend to decry the Supreme Court’s ruling. At Glastonbury, Oliva Rodrigo brought Lily Allen on stage to perform Allen’s song “Fuck You” and dedicated the song to the Justices who voted to overturn Roe. Billie Eilish dedicated a mournful rendition of “Your Power” at the festival to everyone who would be affected by the ruling. Finally, the festival headliner Kendrick Lamar closed out his set with the chant: “Godspeed for women’s rights / They judge you, they judge Christ.”
